The power of wonder
I wonder what dreams have been on your heart that you’ve never stepped out to pursue? Or what opportunities you’ve missed all because of fear or uncertainty? I’ve never heard of anyone who stepped out to do something great and regret it. I’ve never talked to someone who took the job overseas who regretted it. I’ve never talked to someone who pursued that business who regretted it. Even if they fail, they’re glad they did it.
But the opposite is also true. I’ve met many people who have regretted not stepping out to start the business, take the new position, switch careers, or make the move. I’ve known too many people who have watched opportunities pass them by and they will never know what was on the other side.
In fact, just the other day I was talking to someone who told me he had an opportunity when he was younger to move to Australia for a few years. He didn’t. And it’s one of his biggest regrets.
The reason we miss the magic moments
The pain of a missed opportunity is the wonder of what could have been. What could have happened? What experiences could have been had? What friends could have been made? What stories could be forever told and what memories seared into life forever?
So what stops us? We put our wonder in the wrong place. After we’ve missed it, we wonder what we could have missed but before the opportunity we wonder what could go wrong. We wonder if the kids will be ok, if everything will work out, or if anything bad will happen. We wonder ourselves off the ledge and back into safety. We stop short of stepping out because we wonder wrongly.
So I wonder, which wonder you want to have prominence in your life?
Decide today to live a life of wondering what could be. Imagine what your life could be if you started living out what you were made to do and grasp the opportunities that come your way.
It’s never too late
It’s important to remember as long as you have days left to live it is not too late. As long as there is breathe in your lungs there is opportunity to walk in the greatness you were made for. Maybe some opportunities are already gone, but a new opportunity is around the corner. Now learn from your regrets and get out there. Wonder what great things could be if you just took that step. And if it is too big right now to do a big step, then take a step in the right direction.
“Some people see things as they are and say why? I dream things that never were and say, why not?” Robert F Kennedy
